Meet the Team: Thandeka Mcoki – bringing passion, practicality, and perspective to compliance

At Cloud Essentials, compliance is a living, breathing part of everything we do. And there’s no better example of that than Thandeka Mcoki.

As a Senior Compliance Specialist, Thandeka brings a rare blend of legal grounding, business acumen, and tech-savvy thinking to our team – along with a genuine passion for helping organisations protect what matters most.

We sat down with Thandeka to hear about her journey into compliance, what drives her, and how her industry insight translates into smarter, stronger data governance for our clients.

From triple-major to triple-threat

Thandeka’s career journey didn’t start in IT or compliance – it started with a Bachelor of Arts that combined Law, Organisational Psychology, and Philosophy. An unusual mix? Maybe. But one that set the stage for her unique approach to risk and governance.

“I’ve always loved thinking critically and understanding people,” she says. “Law taught me structure. Psychology helped me understand business and behaviour. And philosophy gave me perspective. I didn’t realise it at the time, but all of that led me straight to compliance.”

After adding a postgrad diploma in enterprise management to her belt, Thandeka stumbled across the world of compliance – and was immediately hooked.

“It was the perfect middle ground between law and business. I didn’t even know it was a career path, but once I got into it, I knew I’d found my space.”

From policy to practice

Thandeka’s career has taken her from Catering to Logistics to the heart of IT, where her interest in Information Security and standards like ISO 27001 and 27701 took root.

Her previous role saw her leading internal compliance for a tech company, where she was responsible for building frameworks and rolling out initiatives from scratch. It was here that she first got hands-on with Microsoft Purview, rolling out DLP policies, sensitivity labels, and classification across the business – and making a strong case to the board in the processaligning it to ISO27001 requirements.

“That project really brought together everything I love,” she says. “Problem-solving, educating others, and building systems that make security seamless. I didn’t realise it at the time, but it’s also what led me to Cloud Essentials.”

Balancing risk and reward

Since joining Cloud Essentials, Thandeka has been applying her practical expertise to a wide range of clients, each with their own unique challenges.

“Going from internal compliance to external consulting has been such a great growth point. You don’t just get one set of problems to solve – you get dozens. And I love it,” she laughs. “It’s not just theory. It’s real-world. Messy. Complicated. And incredibly rewarding.”

She’s especially passionate about helping organisations understand the human consequences of poor data governance.

“Even something as small as a name and password falling into the wrong hands – that can ruin someone’s life,” she says. “It could mean their kids’ education, their savings, their retirement plan. That’s why it matters. When you’re handling people’s data, you’re responsible for protecting more than just information – you’re protecting livelihoods.”

One of the biggest hurdles she sees? Getting the right stakeholders around the table.

“People are often unsure whether it’s their responsibility, or they’re simply too stretched to engage,” she says. “But without that input, it’s hard to make meaningful progress.”

That’s where Thandeka’s ability to connect technical, regulatory, and business perspectives really shines, helping clients build governance frameworks that are not only compliant, but workable and well-adopted.

Compliance with energy

Ask anyone who’s worked with Thandeka, and one thing stands out: her enthusiasm. Whether she’s guiding clients through compliance frameworks or leading an internal training session, she brings an infectious energy to everything she does.

That was especially clear during Cybersecurity Awareness Month, when Thandeka led our internal training initiative, keeping the whole team up to speed on the latest cyber threats, and trends and best practices.

“Cybersecurity isn’t just an IT issue,” she says. “It’s a people issue. And you can’t afford to get complacent. That’s why we run regular sessions – not just to tick a box, but to spark conversation, build awareness, and keep the whole team engaged.”

Why Cloud Essentials?

For Thandeka, joining Cloud Essentials was more than just a career move – it was a values fit.

“What I love is that we don’t treat compliance and IT as two separate worlds. We bring them together. We’ve got the tech expertise, but we also understand governance, regulation, and risk. And we don’t offer cookie-cutter solutions. We look at each client’s environment, their challenges, and we build from there.”

As someone passionate about compliance and IT, Thandeka sees herself as a bridge between those worlds, helping clients connect the dots and build strategies that are as practical as they are powerful.

“I like to say we’re doing the Lord’s work,” she laughs. “We’re helping organisations protect people’s data, avoid costly mistakes, and build trust with their customers. And that’s a mission I’m proud to be part of.”
